In the news

  • Headlines overnight reported that global shares mostly declined, led by sharp drops in Asia. Markets in South Korea and Japan sank as a sell-off in technology shares deepened after US stocks fell on hotter-than-expected inflation data.
  • Reports this morning said the tech sell-off had moved from Wall Street overnight into Asian trading hubs. The hotter-than-expected US inflation figures were reported to have sent borrowing costs surging worldwide.
  • Headlines also point to European markets moving lower on Thursday. The global tech sell-off and the US inflation data were reported to have raised concerns about interest rates and equity valuations.

In short, technology-heavy markets and stocks bore the brunt of the declines, whilst some consumer names in Europe edged higher.
